Oats & Ingredient Label Confusion | 10 Sources of Gluten in Make-Up | Groom Gets Glutened

Hello Reader,

A reader recently asked me if an ingredient label has to list "gluten-free oats" vs just "oats" to be considered celiac-safe.

In other words, if the ingredient label says "oats," is it safe to consume?

The short answer is it doesn't have to say "gluten-free oats" on the ingredient label to be safe. However, the long answer is that you need more clues on the packaging (beyond the ingredient label) to discern if the product is safe.

I have much to say about this topic, so I wrote a new blog post. Yay!

Please read Does an Ingredient Label Have to Say β€œGluten-Free Oats” to Be Considered Celiac-Safe? to get the full scoop on this confusing topic. I hope these insights help.

Make-Up You Can Trust

I've always had sensitive skin, but it feels more sensitive as I age.

I had a few scaley red patches around my eyes and ears last month and went to see my doctor. She told me I had dermatitis. This is new. Ho hum.

But it's making me more conscious of what I'm putting on my skin.

Fortunately, gluten cannot be absorbed by the skin and won't cause an immune system reaction in people with celiac disease unless ingested. That's why using gluten-free products on your lips, eyes, and hands is important.

As a reminder, the following ingredients are often found in skincare and beauty products and are usually code words for gluten:

  • Avenin (oats)
  • Avena sativa (oats)
  • Barley and Barley extract
  • Hordeum Vulgare Seed Extract (barley)
  • Hydrolyzed wheat protein (wheat)
  • Malt Extract (barley)
  • Oats
  • Rye (secale)
  • Triticum Vulgare or Triticum Lipids (wheat)
  • Wheat and Wheat Germ Oil

If you're looking for a new makeup brand, please check out my friends at Red Apple Lipstick.

Despite its name, Red Apple Lipstick makes more than just lipstick. Its line-up includes eyeliner, mascara, blush, lip balm, and skincare products, too.

The company was founded 20 years ago by Andrea and Jay Harper, and it's still a family-owned and run business!

3 Nostalgic Foods You Probably Miss

(1) Bagel Chips

Can you remember the last time you had a bagel chip? Long no more because The Greater Knead's gluten-free bagel chips are here and fantastic. I love them so much that I shared them inside my September Love Me Gluten Free box.

If you love bagel chips, check out The Greater Knead's New York-style bagels and soft pretzels (frozen items).

(2) Mozzarella Sticks

I occasionally make my own mozzarella sticks, but, you know, that's work, and Feel Good Foods is doing the heavy lifting for us.

Vanessa Phillips founded the company so she could make nostalgic, chef-inspired treats for the gluten-free community. The FGF line-up includes mozzarella sticks, egg rolls, potstickers, fried pickles, pizza bites, and more!

Look for Feel Good Foods products in the frozen aisle. Love Me Gluten Free subscribers, don't forget to use your free coupon!

(3) Wonder Bread

I know, I know. Wonder Bread is super-processed and full of icky ingredients. But its famous texture is something we children of the 80s and 90s grew up eating.

It looks like BFree has cracked the code on a gluten-free "Wonder Bread-esque" swap when it created its new Homestyle Sourdough Loaf.

This bread is smooth, soft, doughy, and delicious... even without toasting or heating.

You can find it at select Walmart, HEB, and Meijers, but stores are having trouble keeping them in stock, so please be patient.

PS: The BFree wraps are available in the BFree Amazon store (affiliate link), and fingers crossed, the Homestyle Sourdough Loaf will soon be available there, too. Keep an eye out for it.
