Getting Glutened Sucks | Snack & Dessert Recommendations | Keep Austin Weird

Hello Reader,

I visited Houston and Austin with my daughter for fall break. She wanted to look at schools, and I was happy to have a mother-daughter weekend.

I'm, of course, sick now. These days, you can't travel without picking up a bug. Ho hum. 🤒

I'm determined never to miss a Friday newsletter. So I've got tea and tissues in hand. Let's go!

My Cart is Open

My passion is helping you live your best gluten-free life; it's why I created this community and the Love Me Gluten Free subscription boxes.

My November box is officially on sale at lovemeglutenfree.com. The cart will remain open until we sell out. There are about 30 left. Hurry!

Getting Glutened Sucks

I recently ate at an upscale restaurant and had a lovely dinner; they even brought me a warm pre-dinner roll.

However, a few hours after getting home, I was so sick. I was glutened. (I can tell the difference between getting glutened and indigestion or food poisoning.)

We've all been there. We think we're so careful, but alas, gluten happens.

I usually brush off an accidental glutening episode and may even swear off the restaurant for good.

But something inside of me wanted to know what went awry.

So I did something a bit out of character ... I called the restaurant. 😳

The manager was kind and sympathetic; I approached the situation with genuine curiosity vs. anger. I wanted to know what went wrong, not yell at the manager or demand my money back.

He patiently reviewed all the ingredients with me, and everything checked out.

While I don't have a "happy" ending, I was proud of myself for speaking up. If we had figured out what happened, I would have made the restaurant better for the next person.

There is an inherent risk when we eat out, but it's a calculated risk worth taking when social events revolve around eating out. You never want to give up on living your life because of your "diet" or "disability." (And yes, celiac disease is a disability.)

If you've been accidentally glutened, read THIS ARTICLE.

I share suggestions on how to get "through" it based on suggestions from this community and my experiences. I am by no means a doctor, but I do have 12+ years of lived experience with celiac disease, so that's gotta count for something.

Feeling Snacky

Here are a few things I'm snacking on now that I'm stuck at home and sick!

Dried Fruits: Have you all tried DryBox dried fruits yet? OMG, they are incredible. I've sampled a variety of their dried fruits because they sent me a beautiful sampler that included dried apples, dried mulberries, strawberry chips, persimmon chips, pear chips, and more.

Popcorn: I tried the drizzled popcorn by Sweet Chaos, and I have to tell you, it's in a different league of deliciousness. I'm a popcorn addict, so I know things. 😉

Sweet Chaos offers many drizzled popcorn varieties including pumpkin spice and candy corn (both included in my October box), as well as cake batter and peanut butter cup. YUM!

Sweet Chaos does not sell direct on their website, but you can check their store locator to find 'em near you.

Dessert, Please!

Here are two desserts I'm enjoying to feed my cold:

Ethel's Dessert Bars: These bars are the holy grail of gluten-free deliciousness. I thought the lemon crumble bar was my favorite, but then I had the cinnamon crumble bar, and now I'm confused as to which is my fav!

I highly recommend ordering a bunch of Ethel's dessert bars with the following discount code. Store them in the freezer so you'll always be prepared with a decadent dessert this holiday season.

MI-DEL Ginger Snaps: I had no idea you could pack so much flavor into one simple cookie, but MI-DEL has done just that. These cookies capture the essence of the fall in every bite, and I love snacking on them, especially in the fall when ginger is my jam.

MI-DEL doesn't sell its tasty cookies and pie crusts on its website, so check the company's store locator to find 'em near you.

Keep Austin Weird

I loved my visit to Austin .. even though I got sick ... and even though my daughter doesn't see herself as a future Texas Longhorn.

Thanks to the Find Me Gluten Free app, we found two terrific restaurants:

  • Red Farm is the only restaurant I've ever had legit gluten-free dumplings. I'm not sure how they packed so much savory goodness in one bite, but somehow they did! This single dumpling, btw, was $4. 🫢 They have locations in Miami and New York, too.
  • The Well is a dedicated gluten-free restaurant with phenomenal food. Everything is gluten, dairy, soy, and refined sugar-free. We ordered the most delicious guacamole I've ever had. This is no exaggeration. It has pomegranate arils, mint, and citrus notes galore. So good.

Free Omer

It's been 377 days since Omer Shem Tov, a young Israeli man with celiac disease, was taken hostage. It's time to bring him home to his family, where he belongs. This is HIS STORY.

Sincerely,

Jenny 🩷
