Fun at Newtopia

I attended Newtopia, a tradeshow in my hometown of Denver, this week.

The show is new, so there weren't as many gluten-free brands in attendance. However, I still managed to discover a few new products/brands that I can't wait to share with you, including:

Paktli makes puffed ancient grain snacks using amaranth, quinoa, and millet.

Funky Mellow makes marshmallow cream from ... wait for it ... chickpeas!

Zego launched three new organic oatmeal blends: Blueberry Lemon Poppy, Cinnamon & Spice, and Superseeded.

Gheelish is a new popcorn made with organic grass-fed ghee.

I also got to see a few friendly faces, many of whom you will recognize:

Pictured: Michael (Pan's Mushroom Jerky), Colin (Gluten-Free & More Magazine), Sarah (Flax4Life), Julie (BFree), and Erica & Colleen (Zego). You might also know Erica from Celiac & the Beast on Instagram. Hi Erica!

Recipe of the Week

"Bread is hard" are three words muttered by many gluten-challenged people (myself included) ... but I must tell you, this Gluten-Free Naan recipe is the bomb!

If you miss a soft and doughy rip-apart flatbread, this is your sign to hurry up and make Gluten-Free Naan.

Please note you'll need Hand + Heart All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour (affiliate link) to make this recipe.

The Mental Toll of a Gluten-Free Diet

Last week, I talked about how the hardest part about being gluten-free isn't the food; it's the mental toll it takes on us.

I know that message resonated with many of you.

This week, a woman with celiac disease made a TikTok video that challenged me.

She's sitting alone in her car, eating a Jersey Mike's sandwich, and telling viewers that 40 of her coworkers are inside at a potluck lunch while she eats her sandwich alone in her car.

She said she didn't want to be around food she couldn't eat.

Oh man, I’ve been there, especially as a newbie celiac. My heart hurt for her.

But the video bothered me, and I was trying to figure out why.

This woman, who I feel for, I really do, was isolating herself BECAUSE of food.

Just because there's no food for you at the party doesn't mean there's no place for you at the party.

How I would have wanted to handle the situation if it was me (easier said than done, right?):

✅ I would have asked (ahead of time) if anyone was bringing a gluten-free dish. Among 40 people, chances are that someone is gluten-free or cares for someone who is gluten-free and would have offered to make something.

✅ I would have brought a nourishing potluck dish to share. That is the spirit of potlucks, right?

✅ Because I stopped expecting others to accommodate my dietary needs long ago, I would have brought my own food, plopped myself at a table front and center at the party, and had a great time with my co-workers. If anyone asked me why I wasn't eating the "other" food, I would have told them about my medically necessary diet and moved on.

As one of my readers on Instagram wrote, "We have power in how we respond and show up in these situations. Maybe I'm just at a place in life where no one gets the space to belittle me for my need to eat a certain way."

We can't control what's always happening around us, but we can control how we respond.

Again, I feel for this woman. The "Jenny" 10 years ago might have done the same thing.

That's why I know with time and maturity, she will find her way.

Sending good wishes to the hurting TikTok creator and to all my celiac and gluten-intolerant warriors!!

Headlines from Gluten-Free Land

Cheers to Texas: Holidaily, a dedicated gluten-free beer brand, has expanded its distribution to the Lone Star State. Now gluten-challenged Texans can enjoy a cold one without compromising their sensitive tummies. 🍻

Cookies for All: Every Body Eating launched a line of allergen-friendly cookies that just about everyone can eat. The cookies are free from the top 14 allergens and corn, and they come in three fun flavors: Chocolate Chip, Cranberry Vanilla, and Ginger Cinnamon.

BFree For All: Many of you asked where to find BFree bread and wraps. While it's hit or miss at the grocery store, I'm excited to report that BFree officially has an Amazon storefront!! (affiliate link)

Free Omer: It's been 328 excruciatingly painful days since Omer Shem Tov, a young Israeli man with celiac disease, was taken hostage. This is HIS STORY. #freethehostages
