Nostalgic Gluten-Free Recipes | New Celeb with Celiac | Gluten Trickery | Label Changes

Published 2 months ago • 3 min read

Hello Reader,

Whether this is your first or 100th Friday newsletter from me, I want you to know I'm glad you're here!

If you're new to our supportive and positive community, you'll soon learn that I'm committed to sharing the latest news, recipes, and information from Gluten-Free Land.

Dig in and get caught up on everything gluten-free from the week and more!

Feeling Nostalgic

I grew up in the 1980s and '90s when Pop-Tarts were a mainstay breakfast, and Lunchables ruled the cafeteria.

Of course, everything changed when I learned I had celiac disease and had to give up gluten - and my favorite foods - for good.

Over the years (almost 12 years!) I've recreated some of those childhood treats so that I could enjoy them again, sans gluten.

Please check out this list of 15 of my childhood favorite foods (mostly junk foods, sorry) that I recreated to be gluten-free.

Which one of these 15 childhood treats do you miss most?

A Nutty Change

A reader (thanks, D'Arcy) noticed that Emerald Nuts no longer bears the GFCO-certified gluten-free label. She contacted the company and found out it had been purchased by another company, which no longer gluten-tested its nuts.

This cautionary tale should serve as a reminder to read labels carefully, even for products you've purchased a million times.

See what nut brands are labeled gluten-free in my gluten-free nut roundup.

Another Celeb with Celiac

A reader (thanks, Cyndi) told me that Jon Bernthal has celiac disease. He's the star of AMC's The Walking Dead and The Wolf of Wall Street.

I added Bernthal to my list of 50+ Celebrities with Celiac Disease or Gluten Intolerance. The list has grown to 59 celebrities! Am I missing anyone? Reply to let me know.

Donut Try to Trick Us

A popular vegan and gluten-free baker in New York tried to pass off a Dunkin' donut as one of its own. The donut in question was frosted in pink and topped with D-shaped orange and pink sprinkles. The baker delivered it to Cindysnacks vegan market for resale.

The owners of Cindysnacks thought the donuts were strikingly similar to Dunkin's signature donuts, so they used the EZ Gluten home test (similar to Nima) to test it, and, sure enough, they found it contained high levels of gluten! 🤢

The local health department has launched an investigation, and you can read more and see pictures of the donut in question in this Instagram post from Cindysnacks.

Feel Good Foods Under Fire 🔥

Casey the College Celiac wrote in an Instagram Story that Feel Good Foods removed the gluten-free claim from some of its products. Why? The company told her they had to temporarily move their plant to a nearby facility due to a fire.

They said that while the ingredients haven't changed, they have to forgo the GFCO seal until they return to their permanent facility.

Did You Order a Box?

Last week, I launched my gluten-free subscription box business - Love Me Gluten Free. Yay!! I was only able to make a limited number of boxes for April, but I'm adding more boxes for May - sweet!

The boxes will ship the first week in April and I'm dying for everyone to see what's inside. It includes 8 delicious gluten-free products curated under a special theme-of-the-month + an exclusive mystery gift.

I'll open sales to my waitlist FIRST (likely in early April), so if you want in on the fun, please join the waitlist at lovemeglutenfree.com. My May box will be very special - and it's very personal to me. (Yes, that's a hint on the theme!)

Changes at Kinnikinnick

You may be familiar with Kinnikinnick, a Canadian brand that makes a variety of gluten-free products. The pandemic took a toll on the small family-owned business, and the owners were ready to retire, so they sold the business to English Bay last year.

Sue Jennett, the voice behind A Canadian Celiac Podcast, interviewed the new owners.

You can listen to the full podcast here, but the long and short of it is that English Bay will continue to produce Kinnikinnick-branded foods in a dedicated gluten-free facility.

Bring Them Home

It's been 153 days since Omer Shem Tov, a young Israeli man with celiac disease, was taken hostage by barbarians. This is HIS STORY. #bringomerhomenow

It's also International Women's Day, and this is a reminder that 14 women are being held hostage by these same lowlifes.

Every woman in the world must demand the immediate release of these beautiful souls and all the hostages. There can be no peace without their release, and I, for one, would like peace. ☮️

Sincerely,

Hello Reader, Can I be real with you for a minute? There's been something that's been challenging me behind the scenes, and I want to share a bit about it with you, the Good For You Gluten Free community. Google has issued several algorithm updates over the past few months and exploded its AI reach, all of which work against independent creators like me. I won't get into the weeds of how Google is slowly killing my site, Good For You Gluten Free, but it hasn't been easy to watch 10 years of...
